REVIEW: ‘Oak Street’ struggles in establishing right tone

It’s not a good sign when a film leaves a person asking “who is this movie for?” That’s unfortunately, a common occurrence in this dinosaur-filled movie, though.

The picture, written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as suburban married couple, Denise and Greg. All is not happy in their home, though, as their marriage is on the rocks, with Denise particularly tired of the way the relationship is going.

They’re forced to put their marital issues aside, though, to protect their two children when a strange event happens. One morning, they wake up to find their entire neighborhood has been transported back in time to a dangerous age of dinosaurs. Now, the family has to band together to survive and find a way back to their own time.

REVIEW: ‘Disclosure Day’ is a major disappointment from Spielberg

Steven Spielberg is no doubt a fantastic filmmaker with a spectacular career. But when it comes to his recent filmography, things have been rough. Sadly, that trend continues.

The latest movie from the notable director stars Emily Blunt as Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City-based meteorologist at a local station who, after a strange encounter, acquires the ability to speak several languages, as well as some telepathic power. Meanwhile, cybersecurity expert Daniel (Josh O’Connor) is on the run from a nefarious company.

The group, led by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth) is chasing Danile and his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson), because he’s carrying evidence of the government covering up alien life. As the film goes on, the paths of Daniel and Margaret are on a collision course, as the former knows something needs to be revealed, and the latter realizes she has to bring something to light.

REVIEW: Imperfect ‘Hail Mary’ still scores with charm, excitement

Not going to lie, this movie lost some points for not having the 2Pac song “Hail Mary.” I’m only kidding, sort of.

“Project Hail Mary” is a film based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir. Fans of both film and books likely remember Weir’s other novel “The Martian,” which was adapted into a film, garnering award recognition. The latest Weir book-to-movie production stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist aboard an interstellar spacecraft.

Grace wakes up with his ship nearing its destination in a far off system. There, he’s tasked with investigating a microorganism that eats energy from stars, including the sun, which will drastically cool the Earth. Tragically, he wakes up to find his two crew mates passed away. However, he encounters an alien also studying the star eater, and the two decide to partner on a solution.

REVIEW: ‘Predator Badlands’ is an amusing buddy sci-fi adventure

I know we’ve seen a Predator team up with a human-like character before, but now it’s actually in a good movie.

In a spin on the normal structure, the protagonist of “Badlands” is a predator. Their species is actually called Yautja and the hero of the movie is Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Kolomatangi). Considered a runt of his Yautja clan, Dek’s father decides he needs to be killed off for the good of the tribe, but the young warrior is saved by his brother and sent to a world where he can prove himself.

There, he must hunt the dangerous apex predator known as Kalisk, but the planet is extremely dangerous. Fortunately for him, he meets a damaged, but functioning, android named Thia (Elle Fanning) who promises to help him. They begin a journey together and soon learn there’s more danger out there than just the wildlife.

REVIEW: ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ advances story in repetitive fashion

There’s a spot in the filing cabinet at the Department of Redundancy Department for this film’s script.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” once again brings audiences to the moon world of Pandora. Set not long after the events of the second film, the latest “Avatar” picks up with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family still living along the ocean with the water tribe.

While they managed to repel an offensive in the last film, there’s stress for Jake, who knows the humans are still working to not only exploit the world’s resources, but wipe out more Na’vi. Plus, Jake is being hunted by Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who has partnered with an antagonistic Na’vi tribe to go after the Sully family.

REVIEW: ‘Companion’ is an enjoyable frenzy of horror, heart and humor

This is why there was a PSA in “Futurama” with the warning “DON’T DATE ROBOTS.”

The titular companion in this sci-fi feature is Iris (Sophie Thatcher), a young woman who’s going on a weekend getaway with her boyfriend, Josh (Jack Quaid). They’re staying with two couples Josh is friends with, Patrick and Eli, as well as Kat and Sergey.

Unbeknownst to Iris, though, is the fact that she’s actually a robot, built, designed and programmed to be a romantic partner. That fact is eventually revealed to her in the process of the friend group enacting a scheme to get rich, which puts her in danger.

REVIEW: In taking new genre path, ‘M3GAN’ sequel loses original charm

The robot that became a social media sensation in 2022 is back, this time with martial arts skills and a whole lot of exposition.

A sequel, “M3GAN 2.0” takes place two years after the events of the first film. Gemma and Cady continue to live together, with the former now advocating for AI regulations while the latter still struggles to fully fit in. Meanwhile, a new robot, unbeknownst to the protagonists, escapes from its programmers and goes rogue.

With the robot, named AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno) now a threat, and the government suspecting Gemma is behind it, she, Cady and company have to go back to M3GAN for help. Surviving in cyberspace, M3GAN (Amie Donald) agrees, and she still has some of her attitude and sass.

REVIEW: ‘Mickey 17’ is a clumsy creation from Bong Joon-ho

Bong Joon-ho’s follow-up to “Parasite” is unfortunately, no awards contender.

The latest from the South Korean filmmaker is a dark sci-fi action-comedy centered on the character Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson). Needing to flee Earth because of a loan shark, Mickey boarded a spacecraft to a new planet, and took a job known as Expendable, where he does repairs in awful conditions.

In the case of death, his memories and personality has been downloaded, and his body can be recreated, allowing him to live on. The movie picks up with Mickey now on body 17 and surviving a dangerous incident where he should have died. As a result, an 18^th Mickey is made. In doing so, their combined presence alters the course of the future for the a space colony.

REVIEW: ‘The Wild Robot’ is a spectacular, emotional adventure

After every stumble, Dreamworks Animation always seems to get back on track. It’s done so again, following up the disappointing “Kung Fu Panda 4” with a movie that could win the animation Oscar.

Set in the future, “The Wild Robot” centers on its follows its titular character, known initially as ROZZUM Unit 7134, (Lupita Nyong’o), who washes up on an island only inhabited by animals after a failed delivery. Though it takes some time, her processing power eventually allows her to speak with the island’s animals.

Unfortunately, her attempts to befriend the animals and help them with their tasks don’t go well. That is until she finds a lone goose egg and decides to raise the young bird inside. Along the way, she gets help from a red fox (Pedro Pascal) who’s mischievous at first but soon becomes a loyal friend.

REVIEW: ‘Megalopolis’ is a mega misstep for Coppola

Director Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film was an ambitious project, huge in scope and scale. Unfortunately, it’s also a bit of an unmitigated disaster

“Megalopolis” is a film that blends political drama and science fiction. The movie is set in the sprawling city of New Rome, the epicenter of the American Republic. Outwardly, it has all the looks of New York City, but inside, it has aesthetics and fashion reminiscent of ancient Rome.

The film centers on Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), an architect hoping to build a biomechanical utopia via new technology. He’s challenged, though, by Mayor Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), and his cousin Clodio (Shia LaBeouf). Though he has support from his uncle Crassus III (Jon Voight).
