Top 10 Films of 2023

What a great year for movies. There were a plethora of wonderful flicks released in the last 12 months across a mix of genres, making 2023 trips to the theater satisfying.

Like all years with a lot of top shelf movies, it can be hard to narrow a list down to 10. But the more good movies the better, and based on personal enjoyment and what I found most well made, I was able to put together 10 picks. However, like always, I will honor the movies that didn’t make the cut.

Ten Worst Films of 2023

The past year was one where I didn’t see as many films as usual and that meant missing out on a few releases.

For better or for worse, these included pictures such as “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny,” among others. I still saw plenty of flicks, though, and as usual, some of them were a chore to sit through.

Here are the roughest films that were released in 2023 that I experienced.

Top Ten Films of 2022

Dec. 31 was well over a month ago but as always, there were a few films that didn’t become available until January.

Now, having seen the films that were watchable a bit later, I’m ready to set my top 10 list of 2022. It turned out to be a year with plenty of good movies, as the honorable mention list was pretty long this time around.

Here are those and the best 10 of the year.

Ten Worst Movies of 2022

So, we’ve wrapped up the year 2022, but not all of 2022 business.

As part of the process to say goodbye to 2022, I’m sharing the films that received the lowest ratings in the past 12 months. As usual, while most years have plenty of good movies, there are those that go in the opposite direction.

Here’s the ranking for 2022.

Great (fictional) coaches in sports movies

The NCAA Final Four and Frozen Four both take place in the next week.

Then, the NBA and NHL playoffs are right around the corner. As is the NFL Draft, with the Super Bowl in the rear view. Simply put, there are a lot of sports events taking place this time of year.

With that in mind, I decided to take a look at some of the best fictional coaches featured in sports movies. I mean completely fictional, too, so no made up coaches for films inspired by true stories.

A collection of caped crusader cars: Ranking the Batmobiles

The Batmobile has been through a lot of changes in just over three decades

From modified cars to full on armored vehicles for war, Batman’s main mode of transportation through the years has been a diverse mix. The latest Batmobile was featured in the new 2022 film, “The Batman.”

With a new car added to the mix, it seemed like a good opportunity to rank the Batmobiles I’ve seen in movies. Here’s my ranking from worst to best.

Top 10 Movies of 2021

After playing some catch-up in the month of January, I now, finally, feel comfortable to rank the best that 2021 had to offer.

It was definitely good to get back to the theaters more often in the last year, and I’m happy to say that six of my top 10 were seen the big screen.  The variety in 2021 was enjoyable, too, with a great mix of dramas, period pieces and more.

Ten Worst Movies of 2021

It felt really great to get back to the movie theaters in 2021, after having been away for most of 2020 because of the pandemic.

Like always, though, there were a good deal of bad movies in 2021, too. They weren’t confined to the theaters, either.

Here were my lowest rated movies from the last year.

Seven non-scary films to enjoy during fall

Autumn has officially started and horror movie season is approaching with Halloween on the horizon.

With that said, not all films watched during the fall months have to be scary. There are plenty out there from other genres that are great to watch in September, October and November, and I’ve included some of my favorites here.

Just as a note, one of my favorite parts of fall is the sport of football being played. However, I didn’t want to get this list too bogged down and have it become a sports movie column. I did write a piece about good college football films, though, which you can read here.

With that said, here’s the list.

Eight Great Black Widow Moments

In the last decade, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, has appeared in eight Marvel Cinematic Universe films. After her career as a spy, she joined the superhero team the Avengers and was integral in several battles during the Infinity conflicts.

There have been a lot of superb spy moments in the Marvel movies, but these eight are my favorite. I’m of course going with eight because of spiders having eight legs. Seemed appropriate.
