REVIEW: Godzilla and Kong’s New Empire is off to a forgettable start

At this point these films might as well just cut the human characters out entirely, they were barely necessary here.

That’s because, as expected, the latest movie centers on the big monkey and giant lizard. The former, Mr. Kong, has made a home in the Hollow Earth, a space between the planet’s surface and core. Kong is living his life as the Hollow Earth’s de facto ruler, but is rather lonely as the only giant gorilla there.

That changes when he discovers several other massive apes live nearby, but they’re led by a tyrant hell-bent on conquest of the surface. Godzilla, who is becoming aware of this threat, is preparing in his own way. But it’s going to take both rivals to handle the antagonist.

REVIEW: There’s not much for the audience to win in ‘Godzilla vs Kong’

More than a decade has passed since “Cloverfield” was released in 2008. Since then we’ve had another new monster tale in “Pacific Rim” and some returning stars such as when Godzilla returned in 2014.

Finally, this year, two of the most famous movie monsters went toe-to-toe. It’s a shame that all these years later, this film featuring the fight is on the lower end of recent movies in the genre.

As the title of this film clearly implies, the giant lizard with atomic breath Godzilla takes on the mega ape Kong. The movie takes place in the Monsterverse, where Kong has lived secluded on Skull Island, while Godzilla has become more well known, having defeated Ghidorah in 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.”

In this film, Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgard) is recruited by a company to bring Kong to the Hollow Earth, which exists beneath the Earth’s surface. Nathan is informed that doing so could lead titans such as Kong and Godzilla to live in the Hollow Earth area and prevent more destruction on the surface.

To pull off the mission, Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), who studies Kong, is brought in to help. They begin moving Kong toward the entrance to the Hollow Earth in Antarctica. However, Kong’s presence outside of Skull Island draws Godzilla’s attention and the two end up meeting with a desire to determine which titan is king.

REVIEW: ‘Godzilla’ may be a king, but not of cinema

The latest “Godzilla” is chock-full of monsters, yet even the gargantuan creatures don’t necessarily hold this feature up.

The movie begins five years after the 2014 “Godzilla,” where the secretive agency Monarch is keeping track of the giant creature and others across the globe. One of the Monarch researchers is Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), a woman who lost her son in the 2014 Godzilla battle of San Francisco.

Monarch’s research is taken advantage of by radical environmental terrorists, though, led by a man named Jonah (Charles Dance). As a result of their actions, the powerful monster Ghidorah is released, and several others respond by awakening and causing havoc. To stop them, Godzilla has to get back into action.

Godzilla sequel will be the de facto finale of a decade-long buildup

Twenty years ago, following the release of the American adaptation of “Godzilla,” few probably would have guessed that we’d be seeing a film like “King of the Monsters” coming out someday.

SPECIAL Movie Report: Recapping Comic-Con 2018

Despite heavy hitters like Star Wars and Marvel not appearing at this year’s Comic-Con, the annual event still stormed the industry this week with plenty of movie news.
