Top 10 Films of 2024

Nearly a month has passed since the end of 2024.

However, there were a number of films yours truly needed to watch before feeling entirely comfortable making a Top 10 list. Well, a few days into February and I can say that I’ve seen just about all I need to see for a fair assessment on last year’s cinematic slate.

To be completely honest, last year was a bit disappointing in comparison to 2023, which had a much stronger lineup. But there were still quite a few good flicks released that deserve recognition. Like most years, first up is the honorable mentions before the top 10.

Ten Worst Films of 2024

It’s New Year’s Eve and 2024 is almost out the door! But before we say goodbye to the year, it’s time for one last look back at the worst the past 12 months had to offer in cinema.

As with most years, there are some usual suspects on the list (“Madame Web”), but there’s also those where I seem to be in the minority. However, I’m willing to accept that because sometimes a movie just doesn’t work for yours truly.

Check out what made my list below.

Top 10 Films of 2023

What a great year for movies. There were a plethora of wonderful flicks released in the last 12 months across a mix of genres, making 2023 trips to the theater satisfying.

Like all years with a lot of top shelf movies, it can be hard to narrow a list down to 10. But the more good movies the better, and based on personal enjoyment and what I found most well made, I was able to put together 10 picks. However, like always, I will honor the movies that didn’t make the cut.

Ten Worst Films of 2023

The past year was one where I didn’t see as many films as usual and that meant missing out on a few releases.

For better or for worse, these included pictures such as “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny,” among others. I still saw plenty of flicks, though, and as usual, some of them were a chore to sit through.

Here are the roughest films that were released in 2023 that I experienced.

Ten Powerful Political Films

Not too long ago, I finished watching “The West Wing” for the first time.

Yes I was very late to the party on that one, seeing it more than two decades after it first aired on NBC. It was a very enjoyable watch, though, providing a fast-paced look into day-to-day politics.

It’s true that the show’s enjoyment can vary in terms of where one’s politics align, some finding it too left wing, and many seeing it as not left wing enough. However, what really hooks a person in at the end of the day with the show were the characters and the drama unfolding between them.

Now, while I hadn’t watched “The West Wing” for the time I’ve been writing on this site, I have reviewed plenty of political flicks, and watched many more released before that time.

So here’s a simple list of some movies in the political sphere that I’ve found to really get the genre right.

Top Ten Films of 2022

Dec. 31 was well over a month ago but as always, there were a few films that didn’t become available until January.

Now, having seen the films that were watchable a bit later, I’m ready to set my top 10 list of 2022. It turned out to be a year with plenty of good movies, as the honorable mention list was pretty long this time around.

Here are those and the best 10 of the year.

Ten Worst Movies of 2022

So, we’ve wrapped up the year 2022, but not all of 2022 business.

As part of the process to say goodbye to 2022, I’m sharing the films that received the lowest ratings in the past 12 months. As usual, while most years have plenty of good movies, there are those that go in the opposite direction.

Here’s the ranking for 2022.

Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies

Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has four more movies to go, but I feel like it’s a good time for a ranking since several movies have been released in this part of the franchise’s schedule.

Just a note, this will only be about the movies. The only MCU series I’ve watched are “Wandavision” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and I don’t have much interest in the rest.

Also, keep in mind that when it comes to the top 15 or so, some of the films become a little interchangeable. Film is subjective and evolving interpretation, it’s not an exact science or mathematical. So when I have one movie in front of another, there are cases where it’s only barely so.

Most importantly, there will be spoilers.

Ranking the ‘Jurassic’ Movies

The latest entry in the “Jurassic” series is out, meaning another trilogy in the franchise is complete.

All of the films have been commercially successful, raking in cash at theaters. However, when it comes to quality, it varies.

Having watched the sixth installment, it’s a good time to rank all six films, from worst to best.

Great (fictional) coaches in sports movies

The NCAA Final Four and Frozen Four both take place in the next week.

Then, the NBA and NHL playoffs are right around the corner. As is the NFL Draft, with the Super Bowl in the rear view. Simply put, there are a lot of sports events taking place this time of year.

With that in mind, I decided to take a look at some of the best fictional coaches featured in sports movies. I mean completely fictional, too, so no made up coaches for films inspired by true stories.
