REVIEW: Action waltz in ‘Ballerina’ doesn’t surpass other ‘Wick’ films

What if a girl from the John Wick universe was put through the Black Widow program from the Marvel universe? You might just get a protagonist like the one in “Ballerina.”

Ana de Armas stars as Eve in this “Wick” spin-off. An orphan, Eve is trained by an assassin tribe called the Ruska Roma after the death of her father. Ruska Roma operates by developing girls to be both capable assassins and skilled ballerina dancers when they get older.

Eve grows to become such an assassin, and never lets go of the memory of how her father was killed. After one of her missions, she finds a clue about the group possibly behind it, and decides to follow-through on revenge, even without approval from her superior.

REVIEW: ‘John Wick 4’ has wicked action, but wears out welcome

Starting to think this secret society of assassins isn’t too secret anymore after all the mayhem over these four films.

The latest installment starts with the titular character, played by Keanu Reeves, recovering after the events of the third film. Having gotten himself healed and in fighting shape again, Wick heads out on a mission to battle the all powerful High Table so he can once again be free of the assassin life.

Looking to put an end to Wick’s conquest is Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgard), a member of the High Table fed up with John’s antics. To do so, he hires another elite hitman who has been retired for a while. The man’s name is Caine (Donnie Yen), and he’s a former friend of Wick.

REVIEW: ‘John Wick 3’ thrills with top tier action

Mr. Wick is back and as the Latin phrase in this movie’s title implies, he’s going to war.

“John Wick: Chapter 3” picks off right after the events of the second film, so seeing that one is probably a good idea before checking this out. Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a man now on the run. After breaking the rules of the criminal underworld in part two, every assassin in New York City, and basically the world, are after him for a multi-million dollar bounty.

As a result, Wick searches for a way to reverse his predicament and atone for his transgressions. His journey brings him to Sofia (Halle Barry), a person from his past who decides to help him find someway to make amends. The quest remains a difficult one, though, as the group running crime at a worldwide scale want Wick, and anyone who’s helped him, eliminated.
