Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters review

Director:
Thor Fruedenthal
Cast:
Logan Lerman
Alexandra Daddario
Brandon T. Jackson
Leven Rambin
Jake Abel
Rated: PG

Finally, the sequel that nobody was asking for.

The second “Percy Jackson” installment picks up some time after the events of “The Lightning Thief.” Percy Jackson (Lerman), son of Poseidon, is training in a special camp for demigods, which is sort of like a lame version of Xavier’s School for the Gifted from X-Men. Trouble starts coming up when enemy demigod Luke (Abel) gets involved with a plot to destroy the barrier around the camp and reawaken the ancient evil.

To stop the ancient evil, and save the camp, Percy has to go on a quest to find the Golden Fleece. He is once again joined by love interest Annabeth (Daddario) and comic relief character Grover (Jackson) to go on the mission. A new addition to the team is Tyson (Smith), Percy’s half brother who happens to be a cyclops and offers a bit more comic relief.

The Hunger Games review

Director:
Gary Ross
Cast:
Jennifer Lawrence
Josh Hutcherson
Donald Sutherland
Woody Harrelson
Rated: PG-13

Amazing how the technology in this flick ranges from the 1800s to the control deck of the Starship Enterprise.

“The Hunger Games” is set in what can be described as a post-apocalyptic future where the main country where the story takes place is divided up into 12 separate districts and one large capital city. In the Capital resides the government and the richest of the population, where as the 12 separate districts are where the poor live.

To keep order and peace in the country and stay in control, the government created ‘The Hunger Games’ where one young man and woman would be chosen from each district and compete in a survival/fight-to-the-death competition. Our main character, Katniss (Lawrence) was originally not suppose to participate in the games however her sister gets picked and because of this she volunteers herself to take her sister’s place. The movie then follows Katniss’ journey of learning about the capital and fighting in the hunger games itself.

Chronicle review

Director:
Josh Trank
Cast:
Dane DeHaan
Alex Russel
Michael B. Jordan
Ashley Hinsaw
Rated: PG-13

It’s very rare that I can see a movie which I will consider one of my favorite of the year as early as February but, “Chronicle” did it.

“Chronicle” tells the story of three teenage high school boys, Andrew (DeHaan), Matt (Russel) and Steve (Jordan). At first, Andrew is a bit of an outcast. Early in the film he decides to start filming everything around him. Eventually he goes to a party with Matt and Steve and the three come across a cavern with a mysterious rock which gives all three of them the power of telekinesis.

After this the three start hanging out more and become very good friends while learning to strengthen and better control their new found powers. During this time they pull some pranks and have some fun however they soon learn about how dangerous they can be as well and Andrew unfortunately begins going down a bad path.
