REVIEW: ‘Mission Impossible’ saga mostly ends on high note

Just a few years after we said goodbye to Daniel Craig as James Bond, we close the chapter on another super spy who goes on missions for the United States.

The eighth, and seemingly final “Mission: Impossible,” takes place a couple months after the conclusion of the seventh installment. The AI defense system known as The Entity is infiltrating several nations’ nuclear programs and setting the stage for potential atomic disaster.

IMF Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has a key capable of opening a door to technology which could lead to the shut down of the Entity. However, many obstacles, from the villainous Gabriel Martinelli (Esai Morales) to his own government stand in the way of him and his team.

REVIEW: Latest ‘Mission: Impossible’ excels at action, stumbles elsewhere

The “Mission: Impossible” series has always made its protagonist juggle his commitment to completing his objective while protecting those close to him. The first “Dead Reckoning” is certainly no exception.

This time around, IMF Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is informed about a dangerous artificial intelligence system, as well as a set of keys that can gain control of the program or shut it down. Hunt is ordered to recover it for the United States to give the country an advantage, but he goes rogue, believing it’s better to shut down the dangerous system rather than use it at all.

In his mission, he’s joined by fellow IMF teammates Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg). However, they’re far from the only ones after the keys, as several other powers are after them, including a foe from Hunt’s past. Additionally, a renowned thief, Grace (Hayley Atwell), comes into play as she’s hired to get the keys by one of the many seekers.

REVIEW: Latest ‘Mission Impossible’ delivers where it counts: the action

I’m very happy to report that there’s some Grade A Tom Cruise running in this movie.

Cruise is once again running through city streets because his character Ethan Hunt must once again save the world. In his latest (impossible) mission, Hunt and his crew are tasked with recovering three containers with nuclear materials that, in the right hands, can create weapons of mass destruction.

This time, though, Hunt has some baggage. Because the CIA has issues with his methods, they send one of their own agents, August Walker (Henry Cavill). Hunt begrudgingly begins working with Walker, but the mission becomes more complicated when aspects of his past start showing up, too.
